TWO GREAT NATIONS
God bless the Canadian and U.S. militaries
Sir John A macdonald
The first prime minister of Canada. The dominant figure of Canadian Confederation. He had a political career which spanned almost half a century. He was born in Scotland; when he was a boy his family immigrated to Kingston in upper Canada (today in eastern Ontario) As a lawyer he was involved in several high-profile cases and quickly became prominent in Kingston, which elected him in 1844 to the legislature of the Province of Canada. By 1857 he had become premier under the colony's unstable political system. In 1864 when no party proved capable of governing for long,Macdonald agreed to a proposal from his political rival, George Brown that the parties unite in a great coalition to seek federation and political reform. Macdonald was the leading figure in the subsequent discussions and conferences, which resulted in the British North American act. 1867 and the birth of Canada as a nation on 1 July 1867. Macdonald was the first Prime Minister of the new nation, and served 19 years. Only William Lyon Mackenzie King served longer. Macdonald's greatest achievements were building and guiding a successful national government for the new Dominion, using patronage to forge a strong Conservative Party. He died in 1891 still in office,he is respected today for his key role in the formation of Canada.
George Washington was an American political leader, military general, statesman and founding father who served as the first President of the United States from 1789 to 1797. Previously he led patriot forces to victory in the nation's war for independence. He presided at the Constitutional Convention of 1787 which established the U.S. constitution and a federal government. Washington has been called the "father of his country" for his manifold leadership in the formative days of the new nation. Washington received his initial military training and command with the Virginia Regiment during the French and Indian war. He was later elected to the Virginia house of burgesses and was named a delegate to the continental congress, where he was appointed commanding general of the continental army. He commanded American forces, allied with France in the defeat and surrender of the British during the siege of Yorktown. Washington played a key role in adopting and ratifying the Constitution and was then elected president (twice) by the electoral college. He implemented a strong well-financed national government while remaining impartial in a fierce rivalry between cabinet members Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. During the French Revolution he proclaimed a policy of neutrality precedents for the office of president, including the title "President of the United States" and his farewell address is widely regarded as a pre-eminent statement on republicanism. Upon his death he was eulogized as "first in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen" He is ranked as one of the greatest presidents.
